The blaze, which started around noon, was successfully contained to the recycling facility and extinguished by 2 p.m., according to Charles Mix County emergency disaster manager Mike Kotab. Multiple fire departments from Lake Andes, Ravinia, and Wagner responded to the emergency.
The fire destroyed several pieces of equipment at the recycling center, including two balers, a skid steer, and various tools. While a propane tank was present on the premises, firefighters prevented it from igniting, averting a potentially more serious situation.
The Fort Randall Casino, owned and operated by the Yankton Sioux Tribe, resumed operations shortly after the fire was extinguished. The gaming facility features 298 slot machines and includes amenities such as a three-story hotel, lounge, and restaurant. Located 119 miles southwest of Sioux Falls, the casino normally operates from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Wednesday.
The casino management expressed gratitude to the emergency responders on Facebook, thanking them for their swift response and dedication to ensuring community safety. No damage estimates have been released, and no injuries were reported during the incident.
