Polymarket Opens Betting Markets on Luigi Mangione Criminal Case
Cryptocurrency prediction market Polymarket has opened betting markets related to Luigi Mangione, the suspect arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
Police found written admissions about the shooting when they arrested the 26-year-old Mangione at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania. According to an internal NYPD report obtained by The New York Times, Mangione's manifesto described the killing as a "symbolic takedown" challenging alleged corporate corruption.
Current betting markets on Polymarket include:
- 68% odds Mangione will plead guilty ($13K volume)
- 24% chance his manifesto will be released by Friday ($58K volume)
- 1% probability of a real Mangione YouTube channel ($83K volume)
- 10% odds the manifesto will reference "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski ($73K volume)

Polymarket, launched in 2020, allows users to bet on news events using cryptocurrency for anonymity. The platform gained prominence during the recent US election, handling billions in betting volume and accurately predicting Trump's victory.
While the FBI recently raided CEO Shayne Coplan's apartment and seized devices (though no charges were filed), Polymarket maintains it blocks US users and VPNs to comply with regulations. The CFTC has previously investigated the platform over concerns that prediction markets constitute gambling.
