SWAT teams and negotiators attempted for several hours to peacefully resolve the situation. The guest ultimately opened his door while holding a shotgun and rushed toward officers, ignoring commands to drop the weapon. An officer then fired, striking and killing the man.
Hotel security had initially attempted to check on the guest but retreated after hearing what sounded like a firearm being loaded. Police later discovered the man was carrying a second weapon.
Emergency medical treatment was provided on-scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the hotel. No officers or other guests were injured during the incident.
This marks the 16th officer-involved shooting in LVMPD jurisdiction this year. The department will conduct a standard review of the use of deadly force, with additional details and the officer's name expected to be released this week.
South Point Hotel, located at South Las Vegas Boulevard and West Silverado Ranch Boulevard, issued a statement confirming their full cooperation with the LVMPD investigation.
