Broderick Scott, 48, was charged on December 20 following an 18-month investigation into illegal gambling activities at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center and other state prisons. Scott allegedly used smuggled contraband to facilitate the operation, which involved over 30,000 transactions.

The investigation began in 2023 when LSP investigated contraband smuggling reports across multiple state facilities. Scott has been transferred to Iberville Parish Jail and faces charges of gambling and unlawfully establishing accounts on social networking websites while incarcerated.

LSP warns that using third-party payment apps like Cash App to send money to inmates is illegal. The only legitimate methods for sending funds to inmates are through JPay or other officially approved channels listed on the Louisiana Department of Corrections website.

According to LSP, inmates often convince friends and family to send money through unauthorized apps, claiming it's for commissary purchases. However, these funds typically support illegal activities, including drug purchases and contraband smuggling.

The LSP statement emphasizes their commitment to maintaining security in correctional facilities through continued collaboration with state and local partners, promising thorough investigation of illegal activities and accountability for offenders.
