Las Vegas Activates 22 License Plate-Reading Cameras Along Fremont Street
Las Vegas has activated 22 new surveillance cameras along streets intersecting the Fremont Street Experience (FSE), specifically designed to scan license plates of stolen or wanted vehicles. The system immediately alerts law enforcement when matches are found.
The city emphasizes these cameras are strictly for public safety and cannot be used to monitor or enforce traffic violations like speeding or running red lights.
This new system adds to FSE's existing security infrastructure, which includes:
- Over 300 video surveillance cameras under the LED canopy
- ShotPoint gunshot detection system (installed 2020)
- AI-powered "smart safety platform" (installed 2022)
The smart safety platform, developed by Vegas-based Remark Holdings, automatically scans for:
- Fires
- Intrusions
- Unattended bags
- Vandalism
- Graffiti
- Fights
- Loitering
The system also provides crowd counting capabilities and analyzes pedestrian traffic patterns. FSE officials confirm that none of these security systems utilize facial recognition technology.
These security measures serve the millions of annual visitors to the Fremont Street Experience, enhancing public safety while maintaining privacy standards.
