ED Assistant Director Poluri Chenna Kesava Rao and his team were conducting a money laundering investigation when casino staff confined them to a room and allegedly destroyed collected evidence. The officials were interviewing employees and gathering documents when the confrontation occurred.
The suspects include casino director Ashok Wadia and senior employees Gopal Ramnath Naik and Arati Raja, along with other staff members. A formal complaint was filed with Panaji police following the incident.
A police officer explained that casino security mistakenly assumed the investigators were imposters trying to deceive them, leading to an altercation. Local media outlet The Goan highlighted that the incident underscores the risks of plainclothes investigations, noting that uniform-wearing officers are more easily identifiable during enforcement actions.
The lack of uniforms during official operations can create confusion and raise questions about the authenticity of enforcement actions, even during routine duties. This incident has sparked discussion about the need for clearer identification protocols during official investigations.
