The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), representing nearly 200,000 education professionals in New York City, has announced its opposition to the proposed $4 billion Caesars casino in Times Square.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew emphasized that a casino would harm the Theater District and diminish Broadway's educational value for students. With six public schools within walking distance of the proposed site at 1515 Broadway, the union believes the location is unsuitable for gambling activities.

The teachers union joins the No Times Square Casino Coalition, which includes 25 organizations such as:

  • The Broadway League
  • Hell's Kitchen Block Association
  • Sardi's
  • Manhattan Plaza Tenants Association
  • American Bus Association
  • National Organization for Women in New York City

Caesars Entertainment and SL Green, the project developers, defend their proposal, stating it would boost Broadway attendance and provide millions in theater tickets for NYC students. They've secured support from 17 labor unions, including the Actors Equity Association and American Federation of Musicians.

The casino proposal is competing with other major gaming companies for one of three downstate New York gaming licenses, including MGM Resorts, Genting, Hard Rock International, Las Vegas Sands, Mohegan, Wynn Resorts, and Bally's. The Gaming Facility Location Board will select winners by the end of next year.
