Manhattan High Line Casino Opposition Grows Past 5,000 Supporters
Opposition to the proposed Wynn NYC casino has gained significant momentum, with the "Protect the High Line" group now counting over 5,000 supporters across New York City. The organization, formed five months ago, stands against Related Cos. and Wynn Resorts' $12 billion Western Rail Yards development plan.

Key concerns from opponents include:
- Proposed towers blocking High Line views
- Reduction in planned housing units from 3,454-5,700 (2009 agreement) to just 1,500 units
- Lack of community input in development plans
Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, emphasized that opposition comes from diverse communities across NYC, not just the immediate neighborhood. Recent polling indicates most West Side residents oppose a casino in their area.
The project does have supporters, particularly:
- Labor groups anticipating job creation
- Advocates seeing potential homeless aid through revenue generation
Related Cos. has stated that without the casino component, the Western Rail Yards development likely won't proceed. The proposed Wynn casino requires one of three yet-to-be-awarded downstate casino licenses.
The Protect the High Line campaign continues to advocate for development that:
- Respects the 2009 rezoning agreement
- Preserves park integrity
- Prioritizes public benefit
- Maintains commitment to affordable housing
