A new opposition group, "Iowans for Common Sense," has emerged to challenge the proposed $275 million Cedar Crossing Casino resort in Cedar Rapids. The group claims public sentiment opposes further gambling expansion in Iowa.

The opposition comes as Cedar Rapids Development Group (CRDG) and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment (P2E) seek Iowa's 20th state-issued casino license, following the expiration of a moratorium on new gaming licenses in July 2024.

A recent poll by UpOne Insights found that while Iowans support existing casino gambling, 66% oppose additional casinos, with only 30% supporting expansion. This opposition spans across political affiliations.

The proposed Cedar Crossing Casino plans include:

  • 700 slot machines
  • 22 live dealer table games
  • Sports betting facility
  • 1,500-seat concert hall
  • Multiple restaurants and bars
  • STEM lab and cultural arts center
  • 1,100+ parking spaces

The project promises:

  • 500+ full-time jobs
  • $80 million in annual gaming revenue
  • Over 1 million annual visitors
  • 8% of gross gaming revenue to nonprofits (exceeding 3% state minimum)

Jonathan Swain of P2E disputes the poll's credibility, suggesting it may be influenced by competing interests, particularly Elite Casino Resorts and Riverside Casino.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is currently reviewing two feasibility studies regarding the Cedar Rapids casino application, with findings expected in January. Cedar Rapids, Iowa's second-largest city, has previously been denied casino development opportunities for over a decade.

The Washington County Riverboat Foundation warns that a Cedar Rapids casino could harm existing facilities and their associated nonprofits, which currently provide significant community benefits throughout the corridor region.
