Bally's proposed casino project in the Bronx has sparked mixed reactions among local residents, highlighting a complex debate between economic benefits and community concerns.

The gaming operator's senior VP Christopher Jewett argues that since Bronx residents already engage in gambling, a local casino would keep tax revenue within the community. This potential revenue could fund local improvement projects and create approximately 3,500 new jobs.

However, some residents express concerns about the casino becoming a "destabilizing influence on the neighborhood," while others see it as an economic catalyst for the area.

Bally's acquired the lease on Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point (now Bally Links) for $60 million, with plans to convert the property into a casino. However, several challenges remain:

  • The property requires removal of its parkland designation through legislation
  • Assemblyman Michael Benedetto (D-The Bronx) has declined to propose such legislation
  • Land use issues must be resolved before application submission
  • The company needs to purchase the land currently occupied by the clubhouse and parking lot

The competition for downstate casino licenses is intense, with three permits available. Industry observers speculate that MGM Resorts International's Empire City Casino and Resorts World New York may secure two licenses, leaving just one remaining permit. While Bally's proposal remains viable, it faces significant competition and regulatory hurdles.

The licensing process is expected to conclude by late 2025, though some experts suggest it could extend into 2026. State regulators have not confirmed any preferences for license recipients.
